You can’t make homemade maple syrup unless you have maple trees and the right equipment. Even then you would need a lot of trees and a lot of time. Even if you had 20 trees, you wouldn’t end up with much. Fortunately, you can make your own delicious syrup for pancakes, waffles, or french toast from scratch.
You get the great sweet taste of syrup when you make it yourself without all the preservatives. This is also great for when you are in the mood for pancakes or waffles and just so happen to run out of syrup. It is made of basic ingredients that you probably have at home.
First you will need a saucepan and wooden spoons as well as the following ingredients and amounts: one cup of granulated sugar, one cup of brown sugar, one cup of water, 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon of maple extract. If you dont have any brown sugar, you can use all granulated or white sugar, but it wont be as dark and rich. You could even experiment with dark brown sugar if you would like.
Next, mix the water and both the sugars in the saucepan. Place it on the stove on medium high and bring it to a boil. Let it simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes or until it is thick enough for your liking.
I prefer it to be nice and thick so that it doesnt soak into my pancakes or French toast so easily and make it soggy. Thinner syrup will resemble more the consistency of real maple syrup. Test it out for the best way that you like.
You can add more sugar or use less water if you want to make it thicker. This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled for large batches. Use it right away or store it in the refrigerator. Use an old syrup bottle or another jar to store it.
This syrup with keep in the fridge for weeks. The next time you go to use it, it might be hard. Just stick it in the microwave to soften it. Warm syrup tastes great and is perfect for warm pancakes or on an ice cream sundae. Add a couple tablespoons of butter to the syrup if you like a buttery flavor.
What’s so great about making your own homemade syrup? Probably just about anything you make homemade is better. It tastes better and is cheaper. It’s not as high of quality as real maple syrup, but a lot of people don’t even like the taste of real maple syrup.
