You`ve probably heard the word being used, but if you don`t understand what exactly a paralegal is or does, you aren`t alone. This article will explain everything you need to know about the profession.
Just What is a Paralegal?
Another title for paralegal is legal assistant and this is perhaps more revealing. It usually requires two years of studying to go to a paralegal school and these two years allow the person to do many of the more mundane tasks that a lawyer would normally undertake. While not an actual lawyer, the assistant is legally allowed to perform some of the same work.
You`ll often see ads for this type of work, since lawyers often hire a paralegal to work in their office. Larger law firms will have several working, each one taking on the jobs from several lawyers.
What a Paralegal Does
The work that is done by a legal assistant is varied. Essentially, the assistant is helping out a lawyer, or often several lawyers, by taking over some of the repetitive jobs or things that would be a waste of time for the higher paid professional. It`s still a good way to earn money, but without all the schooling required to become an attorney.
Let`s look at what a paralegal cannot do first. They cannot do anything that would be considered practicing law, including:
Giving legal advice Setting fees Acting as counsel in a courtroom
That being said, there is a vast area of tasks that are legally allowed and these are where the legal assistant will focus his or her attention while working for a law firm. The majority of this involves work that a lawyer could do but simply doesn`t have time for.
Investigations are the primary area of need. Finding witnesses, looking for previously decided court cases similar to the one at hand, and doing all manner of research involved in court cases is something that the attorney will not usually be involved in. So, they turn this work over to their assistants.
In addition, all the paperwork that goes along with these investigations will be taken on by the paralegal. This involves typing up reports, preparing court motions and even working on contracts and agreements that will later be approved by the lawyers.
What a Paralegal Needs to Know
While not actually a lawyer, the paralegal will be studied in court procedure since he or she will often be present during cases to provide the correct paperwork and reports for the attorney. This is a great help, since the attorney can focus on the actual presentation and the papers and reports are handed to him or her as needed, in the correct order. This requires an extensive knowledge of how everything works in the courtroom, from court motions to draft pleadings, all of which are taught during those two years.
The majority of the work that a paralegal does is paperwork. While this could be boring, it does involve some interesting cases and requires understanding most of the legal proceedings that will occur. This is the part that can be challenging and interesting and is the main reason people choose this profession.
Paralegals are a very important part of the legal system. Without them, lawyers would be required to do all the grunt work themselves and this would leave very little time for taking statements and prepping witnesses for the actual court cases. It`s a job that requires skill, training and the ability to work hard and accurately. It`s not for the faint of heart, but many people enjoy the challenge.
You will no doubt be aware that submitting a dissertation to be awarded a degree is an absolute certainty. The research paper will be an important part of your degree and will count towards the final classification you are awarded. There are a few keys to success, beyond actually doing the research and writing your dissertation, which are proofreading, editing and revision.
Readers are often unimpressed when they do read a dissertation that hasn’t been proofread, edited and revised. You will need to ensure that your work is flawless before you submit it.
When the marker is evaluating your work, they will be interested in specific patterns and the overall arrangement of your work, making sure to not if there are any inconsistencies in your paper. Therefore, considering editing and revision should be clearly on your mind, to ensure that your work is free from mistakes and that the reader is fully able to review your paper.
Your paper should be laid out similar to that of a newspaper article. Having introductory news at the beginning, moderate news in the middle of your paper, and reviewing news that will bring your paper to a close.
Similarly, editing a dissertation report is also important. Your report examiner is looking for your report to be full of information, but also a report that has been edited and is written and formatted in a defining manner, with important points being highlighted. Moreover, they expect your paper to be free from errors and your argument to flow. So a thorough revision of the report becomes important.
You should think of a situation where you have mistakenly written a word in your paper that means one thing, yet you meant it to mean another; this will not only confuse your argument, but your marker will assume that you have not proofread your paper.
If you don’t review your paper thoroughly, then the overall meaning of your writing, research and argument may deteriorate and the standard of your paper will not enlighten the reader as you will have hoped; thus resulting in fewer marks and an overall lower grade.
You will most likely be asking how you will go about editing and reviewing your dissertation paper. Well, the main few things that you should do are set our below:
1. Editing – when editing you should consider: a. Don’t leave editing to the last minute and give yourself time to complete it, as it is an important step. While writing the report, edit the sections as they come up, and by doing so, you will make your job easier and more efficient.
You should also consider the format and layout of your paper. If you do not correctly edit the format of the different chapters of your dissertation, then you could annoy your reader.
iii. You should highlight any important points in your paper, by spending extra time on their discussion and evaluation. You should also use an appropriate editing tool that will leve you will more option in editig your work, with MS word considered an optimal choice for many students.
2. Review – When reviewing your written work, you should consider the following: a. Review each section separately, and give adequate time for each section. You should spend a considerable amount of time reviewing and revising your work.
You may also find it easier to print off your work on paper, instead of reviewing it on the screen. You don’t want to miss any mistakes, so your work will be easier to check.
These are a few steps that, when followed with full sincerity, will make it easier for you achieve a better grade. Finally, you should give equal time and importance to dissertation editing and review, as you have given to the actual writing of your report.
If you are contemplating taking on a second language, its common practice to lean toward a language that is very similar to your native tongue. Languages that share similar words, similar sentence structures and similar conjugations to any language that you are already fluent in will most likely be all the easier for you to pick up quickly. People often compare the romance languages like French, Spanish and Italian; or the Germanic languages like English, German and Dutch and site all of the notable similarities that connect them and how seamlessly one can be translated into the other, but do you know why some so seemingly different languages share so many similarities?
Its All Relative
The reason that some languages are so similar to others is that the two are somehow related, and as they say, the apple doesnt fall far from the tree. The different families of languages share the same or very similar words or word combinations often because one language was partially derived from the other. Languages change over time, they borrow words, sounds and ideas from other languages and melt them into their own ” this has been going on since the dawn of the spoken work.
Thousands of years ago, as these languages were being developed, explorers where traveling to new lands and picking up nuances of communication from the people that they were interacting with and in essence changing or newly developing the language that they were speaking. Languages are constantly changing and evolving and in essence turning into different languages.
If an English speaking American from today could be transported back in time to the year 1900 and tried to communicate with someone speaking English as it was spoken at that time, the two would have a very difficult time understanding each other due to all of the words, ideas and phases that have been borrowed and absorbed into the English language over the course of the last thousand years. If the English spoken in America continues to transform itself at the rate that it has over the last few hundred years, they may have to start calling it American English, because of all of the alterations will have created a real separation between it and the English spoken in England ” though the two would still be from the same family of languages.
Spanish and French seem so similar to one another because they are so closely related, despite the fact that there are many differences present with individual words and vowel sounds, the two languages have enough similarities in terms of pronunciation and structure that someone who is fluent in one can often understand at least some of the basics of the other without having had any formal instruction.
The Borrowers
Even when two languages arent directly related there can be a connection that leads to some glaring similarities. When two previously unrelated languages come together, as could be the case with war occupation or invasion, one language will often borrow any number of things from the other ” adding potentially hundreds of new words to the borrowing language. This is precisely the reason that there are so many similar words in the English language and the French language. French speaking Normans had at one time occupied a portion of England, the English speaking natives borrowed several words and phrases that stuck and effectively altered the language from what it had been and made it much more similar to a language from another language family
Purely by Chance
The least likely reason of all of the potentials for a similarity among different languages is the fact that it is so purely by chance. Things can certainly happen by chance or by accident, which may be why two words from otherwise entirely different languages, having the same meaning, may sound similar, but when there are several similarities of sounds, pronunciation or grammar, often either the languages are related or there has been some other reason for borrowing.
There are many ways to complete your education or get a degree today that didnt exist just a few short years ago. Many traditional institutions offer online learning opportunities as well as truly online universities. The only difference is that online universities may not require any on campus work.
Going to school online requires that students are comfortable with doing assignments and learning online. Additionally, they need to be disciplined and do their work in a structured way. Unlike sitting in a classroom, online universities require students to log on to access work and assignments.
Selecting an online program is easy if you know how to search and what to look for. Start your search by doing an internet search for accredited universities. This means that the school’s curriculum has been approved by an accrediting agency. This is important if you ever wish to transfer or have your credits count towards another degree.
After starting your search, focus on the area for which you want your degree. If you are looking for an online degree in culinary, then dont seek out schools with only one offering. There are online schools that specialize by discipline. Your best bet is to find a school that has a strong program in the degree area you want.
After you have identified a list of potential programs, find out how long it will take for you to finish your online degree. You should also determine online attendance costs, requirements, and commitments. Find a program that meets your needs in the time frame you are looking for. Most importantly, think about your finances. How will you pay for your degree?
After your research is complete, its time to start the application process online. Completing school applications take some time so be sure to begin well in advance of any deadlines. Online schools are sometimes more flexible with admission dates but you should be well aware of class schedules. Making mistakes on your application could delay the process so be careful when completing your work.
Once you complete your online application, classes will begin. Be mindful of when the semester starts and what you will need for your classes. If you are not sure what you will need, check with the school. They have a complete list of all required materials. Lastly, be comfortable with the process of learning online before you begin. Work with a school counselor to understand the process and what is required of you.
Make sure you have a good computer and reliable internet access. Online educators are not very tolerant of assignments that havent been completed because of difficulty accessing the internet. If you have a good computer and reliable internet access, you are ahead of the game and are likely to succeed. Attending school online is a great way to learn. Investigate online learning options and be sure to ask the right questions.
If you are a student completing your dissertation at the moment then you will understand that the work you are completing is difficult. Having your dissertation proofread and edited will mean that you will be able to understand where you have made mistakes in your paper and ensure you submit a polished document.
You will have probably taken time to plan, research and write your dissertation research paper. You may have missed social events, stayed up late through the night to finish writing a chapter and even re-read the same studies several times. You have put a lot of effort into your document and have a clear grasp of the subject.
However, there is one significant questions that you need to ask yourself: have all of the mistakes and confusing sentences been eliminated? Does your document read with ease and have concise and clear arguments? The tone of your paper should be the same throughout and without a thorough proofread you could miss out on vital marks. An expert can provide you with a clear evaluation of your written material.
Allowing someone else to proofread and edit your dissertation will be a good decision. You have spent a huge part of your time researching and writing your paper to effectively notice even the simplest mistakes. Even if a friend or family member reviews your written material, this will allow you to understand your paper from another person’s point of view. This will allow you to realize what your dissertation supervisor would have been faced with if they had marked your paper without a thorough proofread.
When you read over your own work your mind will play tricks on you, making your work appear to be something that is isn’t. You will have written numerous essays and reports whilst in academia and you will be used to the style and tone of your writing – believing it to be clear and concise when it is actually a little muddled. Thus you won’t notice simple mistakes in your own written work, simply because you already know what the details are.
If you decide to ask a company to proofread and edit your dissertation then you should review the experience of their editorial team and establish their understanding of academic work. You will want to make sure they have experience in your research field. You should aim to recruit a proofreader who is able to both proofread and edit your work, and review for style, clarity and tone of your argument.
If you choose to have your dissertation edited, then you will be advised what changes would be appropriate to increase the readability and style of your work. You will want to ensure that your paper is the best it can be before submission, so having the editor edit your sentences will mean that you will be able to submit your work and make maximum impact.
With more and more students looking for ways to fund college, scholarships have become increasingly competitive. Making your application stand out is essential. Here are seven steps that can help.
1. Type everything if possible. If not, write in black ink so your materials can be photocopied easily by the scholarship selection committee.
2. When asked for references, get them from folks who know your academic potential and personal strengths. Letters from neighbors, family friends, etc. are not what most scholarship committees want.
3. Neatness and organization count. Everything you submit should be neat and well organized.
4. Avoid being disqualified for an incomplete application. Complete each section of the scholarship application as if winning the scholarship depended on it. It does.
5. Submit the application well before the deadline. It creates a good impression.
6. Attach all documents together with a large paper clip. Do not use staples. Put everything in an attractive, well constructed folder.
7. Put the folder in a large, sturdy envelope so everything will look as good when it arrives as it does before you mail it.
There are no guarantees, but these seven very simple tips can help separate your scholarship application from some of those not as carefully assembled. And, every little edge you can get may make the difference for you. Best wishes.
Whether you’re a native English speaker or have emigrated from another country, every one can stand to improve English speech, writing, comprehension and rhetorical skills. Language is our means of communication. When you advance your language skills, you become a better communicator and thus meet with greater success in your social and business interactions. Misunderstandings, due to poor English, can be avoided when you seek to improve your skills. Here are five easy exercises, that, when practiced consistently, will set you on the path to a mastery of English.
Improving English language skills always involves building your vocabulary. To this end, get a good dictionary. If you’re not a native English speaker, get a combination dictionary which provides two sections, one in your native language and the other in English. In either case, choose at least five new English words to learn each day. Keep a list as you go along and periodically review your list. With just five words per day, your vocabulary will increase by almost 2,000 words in a year! If you use a combination dictionary, look for words you know in your native language that you don’t know how to express in English. This method can really get you up to speed in a hurry.
When you look to improve English skills, a grammar book is essential. There are a number of excellent grammar books. One classic text is Strunk & White’s ‘Elements of Grammar’. Another terrific resource is ‘Essentials of English’, which covers grammar, correct usage and punctuation, with separate sections which teach you how to achieve clarity in your speech and writing, as well as getting into commonly misused words and expressions.
Although your grammar book discusses parts of sentences, syntax is often one of the most difficult areas to master. Syntax is how you order the words in a sentence. To improve English skills in this area, study the parts of sentences in particular detail. Practice and enlist the help of a skilled native English speaker to enhance your skills.
You’ve doubtless heard of the language immersion techniques, where a person is put amongst people who speak nothing but the native language. Through repetition, imagery and demonstration, people can learn a language in a couple of weeks, at least to a conversational level. Try this with friends and ask for corrections and feedback.
Finally, sign up for an English course. It can take place in a classroom, through an email course, distance learning or through online video seminars. Choose the venue that suits your abilities and schedule.
Follow these five avenues to improving English. Be consistent in your practice sessions. You’ll eventually achieve a relative degree of mastery of the English language. Remember, there’s always something left to learn!

A person who recalls things with unusual accuracy is said to have a photographic memory. In the memory of such a person, items such as pages of print, pictures or even sounds can be reproduced exactly. A photographic memory can absorb the details of such items and sounds in under a minute.
Photographic memory is undoubtedly a coveted talent; known as total recall, eidetic memory, the process understood as photographic memory is a process where the individual is capable of absorbing information via a formed visual image, which is later retrieved with amazing clarity and precision. It is believed that the individual with a photographic memory takes a mental snapshot of what he or she is looking at and organizes in his or her mind that near instant retrieval of the information is available.
Only about one tenth of the worlds population is thought to have the gift of photographic memory. Studies show that most of these people are children. As they grow older, the photographic memory ability seems to lessen.
There are adults with photographic memory too. Some famous people have been identified has having a photographic memory. Musical composers and artists are often times the adults that possess a photographic memory which offers the correlation between artist ability and the ability to memorize things visually.
Some film makers have broached the subject of photographic memory in their films; an example can be identified in the movie the Rain Man, which is a movie that is based upon real life events. Some television shows also approach the subject of photographic memory: the X Files is one such show.
Many people desire the ability to have a photographic memory. Students could certainly benefit from the powers offered up by a photographic memory, and other people simply want to be able to recall everything they possibly can. People who have jobs that deal with visual items and projects can also benefit from having a photographic memory.
Are there any cons to having a photographic memory? There may be a down side for some individuals; if a person has a photographic memory they may be over-stimulated by the external environment with greater ease. This many cause stress, tension and anxiety.
There are conflicting opinions from psychologists about photographic memory. For those who consider the ability exists, the results of certain experiments are seen as evidence. They cite people who can remember a page of print after one glance, and chess players who seem to use photographic memory to recollect positions of pieces in a game.
Those who assert that photographic memory is not real argue a different argument. According to some, a photographic memory is merely a display of someone who has a better ability to focus on material and to arrange it in meaningful ways. This talent later allows for super fast, efficient, and precise memory retrieval.
A photographic memory, therefore, has advantages and disadvantages. Adults who would like to enjoy the benefits of such ability should not be discouraged by the fact that it is found mainly in children. Although you may not acquire a photographic memory you can work with various strategies, such as games and courses, to improve your memory as much as possible.
Reading is an important activity for many reasons, yet society often constrains people from reading as much as they should. With television, nightclubs, and other events, it can be hard to set aside time to read.
Reading is one of the simplest and easiest forms of leisure. All you need to do is sit down, look at pieces of paper is sequential order, and enjoy. When reading something really good, one can become lost in the story.
In society, it is looked upon as a positive quality to be well read. Not only is it good for conversation, but knowing the substance of many historically regarded stories enables one to understand allusions to them in popular culture. For many people, just the latter is enough reason to read.
The price of books has declined substantially over the years, and in this economy, that is a very beneficial fact. It is interesting to note that we now take books for granted, yet hundreds of years ago you had to be of the highest economic class to even own one.
You can bypass the purchasing stage altogether by going to a library. As long as you abide by their rules, you would never have to pay for a book again.
Even if you do not want to buy or rent a book, you can still read one via the Internet. Many organizations have replicated books on to the web, and many of these organizations do not require that you pay to have access, which is always good.
Nonfiction books are also great to read. They can be as entertaining as fiction, but they increase your knowledge in a variety of areas.
If you have bought many books over a long period time, you will amass your own personal library. This is useful primarily for future reference, and you have the capability to view any book you own whenever you want.
