Salt Licks and Tips

Posted By Deb Gallardo on June 4, 2008 @ 10:26 am

When we first moved back to the States from Germany, after my military husband’s three month training in Arizona, we lived in a rural area in south central Pennsylvania. Our house was owned by a couple who had gotten themselves into financial trouble and in order to prevent their home being foreclosed upon, they entered into an arrangement with the local bank. The couple and their two children moved in next door with his parents, into a three-bedroom trailer. Talk about tight quarters.

It was an uncomfortable arrangement from the start, especially when the husband of the couple would regularly stop by and invariably say goodbye (long after over-staying his welcome) by saying, “Hey! Don’t take no wooden nickels.” But there were perks. A full size pool table came with the house, since Mr. Wooden Nickels had no place to store it. And, truth to tell, he didn’t think he could get it out of the basement since they brought it into the house before the doors were hung.

Another bonus was a water softener, which neither my husband nor I had ever owned. And that water definitely needed softening. But the chemicals were so expensive! Here’s a cost-saving tip if you live in an area where hunting is commonplace. By a salt lick at the local hardware store and drop that into your softener. Does the job at a fraction of the cost of the “standard” stuff. Just ask your hardware store manager.

The Best of Both Worlds

Posted By Twyla on May 23, 2008 @ 8:05 pm

A lot of our friends are starting to have kids and this is very exciting for me, as we had our first one five years ago and have been patiently waiting for him to have some other kids to play with.  Now he has quite a number of little playmates and we have new topics of discussion with all of our friends.

Over the past few years, I have come up with ideas for unique baby gifts.  One of the most popular is the diaper cake.  It looks I get three tiered cake made with diapers and garnished with baby things, such as soothers and rattles.

I think that it is appreciated by the parents when some thought and effort is put into creating something special for their perfect little baby and I also enjoy coming up with new ideas.  It seems to be the best of both worlds for both the parents and for me.

Organized Kitchen

Posted By Twyla on April 26, 2008 @ 3:38 pm

I am sure that every woman I know has been to one of those home based business parties that sells food storage units. I have been to several and in fact, my kitchen is completely stocked with different jars and bins. I don’t think that any of my groceries stays in the box it was purchased in.

Though much of this food storage paraphernalia can be quite costly, it does make a kitchen seem much more tidy and organized. In my kitchen, everything has a place and this makes it a lot easier for me when I need something for cooking and it makes my kitchen easy to clean.

My favorite food storage unit would have to be my lettuce crisper. Lettuce used to go bad in my refrigerator very quickly, but since buying this, it lasts about three times longer than it used to. It is also nice because I find my vegetables are not getting squished anymore and my fried even looks neat and tidy.

Planning for the Perfect Wedding

Posted By Twyla on April 24, 2008 @ 7:58 pm

Ever since I was a little child, I have always dreamed of a fairy tale wedding.  For me, a wedding is one of the most important events in one’s life, and it needs to be treated that way.  I made sure to let my future husband know early on what I was expecting and he was okay with my wishes.

To ensure that we did have the best wedding ever, we hired a wedding planner to ensure that we didn’t forget anything.  She was very helpful in picking the perfect location, the perfect caterer, and the perfect decorations for the event.

Even though I was very nervous on the day of my wedding, our planner had things under control.  She was there to make little tweaks to the people involved in the ceremony, to make sure we knew what to do and keep a tight reign on our show.

When the day was over, I knew that it had been perfect thanks to our planner – she made my dreams come true.

Learning in the Comfort of Your Own Home

While surfing the Internet today, I came across some very interesting things.  Perhaps most interesting site a came across was Virginia College Online.

What I found interesting about the site, was the fact that their college offered the opportunity to work on a degree at home and at your own pace.  This is vastly different compared to what traditional colleges offer.  Instead of having a rigid schedule of where you have to be for your class, you can pick the times that you will work on the class.

I was happy to see that you could study anything from their healthcare degrees online to the business degrees online that they offer as a part of the curriculum.  They don’t have a specific timeline set out for you to follow, rather you can work at your own pace.

Since I love learning so much, I think I might go online and learn a new subject.  But I will definitely keep the online classes option open as it will mesh well with the times that I work.

Supporting Fellow Immigrants

Posted By admin on April 8, 2008 @ 3:43 pm

The sad reality of the world right now is that you don’t see people helping each other out very often anymore.  Whether is that we are too busy to lend a helping hand or that we are just too scared to anymore, and it is sad to see that there are many people that don’t help others in need.

Today I found an example of a website that was created to help Calgary’s Pakistani community.  It was a refreshing change to see people helping others out.

Their site was geared at helping members of the Pakistani community have access to resources that can be useful to them including such things were to find Pakistani foods in Calgary.  They also offer their website visitors the chance to practice for the Class 7 knowledge test so that they can get their learners permit in Alberta.

I was very happy to see that there are still people out there helping one another and I bet that I am not the only one that feels this way.

A Good Night Sleep

Posted By admin on April 7, 2008 @ 6:18 pm

If you have ever lived on a busy street, you know how hard it can be to get a good night sleep.  With all the noise created by cars driving by, it can be really tough.  I can remember a couple of places that I rented on the main drag, and the sleepless nights that I had.

Sure, I tried all of the gimmicks like a fan blowing, ear plugs, and even a pillow over my ears.  But quite frankly, none of them worked.  Sometimes you would be lucky and get an hour at a time of sleep, but I would be so tired that I couldn’t function the next day.

It wasn’t until I bought a white noise machine that things finally turned around for me.  I think that the first night I used it, it was the first time that I slept all night for months.  It quickly became my best friend and I don’t go anywhere with it now.

Solar Powered Dreams

Posted By Twyla on April 4, 2008 @ 6:03 pm

A few years ago, I remember my husband being excited to go to Canadian Tire to look at the solar panels. At the time, I would roll my eyes at him and think he was crazy, acting all childish and giddy. Things have changed a lot since then. For one thing, he finally did get that solar panel that he had always wanted.

It did not stop there, though. One panel was not enough for very long. Soon he wanted the bigger and better ones. Not taking the environmental benefits into consideration, I would argue with him that they were too expensive and were a waste of money. That day he made it his mission to convert me.

It worked. He got a ton of information about solar power for me to read and after many discussions and I can now proudly say that we have a complete solar power system running our house. I no longer make fun of him and his solar powered dreams, but rather I lay back and dream right along side him.

Dr. of Self Esteem

Posted By admin on March 26, 2008 @ 2:16 pm

newcoloriris-before-and-after I went to a small seminar that was being offered on how to change your eye color. I am interested in this, as I am a medical student studying to become a plastic surgeon and I had never heard of this procedure before. It interested me, as it is exactly the type of thing that I would like to do in my own practice one day.

I really paid a lot of attention at the seminar so that I could learn exactly how to change eye color on other people. I am fine with the color of my own eyes, but I know that there are a lot of people out there who do not love their eye color and a procedure like this could change their lives.

Many people think that being a plastic surgeon is not as worthy as other types of doctors, but I disagree. I think that by changing what someone thinks is an imperfection, it will help self esteem and that is very important. In fact, and iris color change could mean that someone thinks of themselves in a whole new light.

Communicating to Our Joint Venture Partners

I have organized a joint venture partner group for real estate investors.  The idea behind a group is to allow us to have the opportunity to get into large-scale real estate investments that we would normally not be able to invest in on our own.  These opportunities have included apartment complexes, hotels and large commercial buildings.

You would think that the hardest part of the whole group would be the organization and collection of funds before closing a purchase of an investment property.  Strangely, that hasn’t been our problem.  In fact, our largest challenge has been finding a medium with which the partners have the opportunity to communicate with one another.

It would have been the easy to have a meeting with everyone in one room if we all lived in the same city.  But that is not the case.  You see, some of the partners do live in the same country as I do, but a lot of them live overseas.  What we needed was an efficient communication method that was easy and affordable.

One of the partners suggested that we can use toll-free conferencing through AffordableConferencing.com.  He had used it before for one of his companies and he had mentioned that the pricing and service were second to none.

So we have contacted the company and have signed up for their service.  We will be testing it out on our conference call this weekend, and hopefully everything will run smoothly.
