Charter into new waters this summer. For many kids, coming to camp is a big adventure! One of the biggest challenges is swimming in a lake. We all have had experience swimming in a nice blue pool. There is security in being able to see the bottom of the pool. Lake swimming is to enter the wild water and to cross a border. You pass the lake?s edge and you break the surface of the water itself. In doing so, you move from one realm into another: a newrealm of freedom, adventure, magic and occasional danger. Watch out for those Turtles and Fish! Swimming in open water is a newexperience that’s not to be feared, but embraced. Once you feel comfortable swimming in a lake, the world willopen up to you and wherever you see water you willsee a new adventure waiting. Swift Nature Camp has over 1500 acres of water right out your cabin front door. At Swift Nature Camp we have a wonderful swimming area full of fun toys, not to mention Wally (the water trampoline) & Sally (the slide). “Free Swim” is one of the most anticipated times of the camp day, but “Instructional Swim” is there tohelp give you build the confidence for those free swims. You can even earn American Red Cross Swimming levels

Swift Nature Camp is only a few short miles from Minnesota. It’s like having a Children’s summer camp in Minnesota. We are so fortunate to be able to avail ourselves to the natural beauty of Minnesota. Near Lake Superior, the largest of the great lakes. Many Swift Campers hike along the scenic bluffs of the Superior Hiking Trail. A little further north in Minnesota, campers participate in canoe trips to the Boundry Waters of Minnesota. This National Park is untouched by man. Here in this Minnesota camp, the views are breathtaking from the deep dark forests to the sparkling lakes, the naturalistic and simple beauty is evident while canoeing from lake to lake or just taking it easy while picking blue berries.

Horses! Enough said. Today’s children often have their first interactions with a horse at summer camp. For most of us living the urban dream it is hard to have enough time in a day or space to own a horse. Yet at camp, children have the opportunity to get back to our American roots and have a relationship with a horse. Yes, a relationship! Horses have personalities, even more so than your family dog. Because they can do so much more, carry you through the woods on trails to places campers have never seen before. Our goal at Swift Nature Camp is to help children build this relationship while understanding basic horse care while learning how to ride.

Over the past few years I have been happy to act as the Vice President of the Midwest Association of Independent Camps (M.A.I.C.). We represent the very best independently owned and operated summer camps in the Midwest. MAIC includes kids’ summer camps in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana. Our organization educates and inspires camping professionals to be their very best. MAIC is a group of camp professionals who are dedicated to promoting high quality standards in organized camping, while offering children and their parents the best possible summer camp experience. Members of MAIC have been meeting together and sharing ideas, methods and practices since 1960. To parents looking for a top quality resident camp or day camp in the Midwest: we are a great place to start your camp search. CampsRus.com is a camp directory that represents over 45 of the very best summer camps in the midwest. If you are looking for an amazing summer camp job working with children, be sure to choose an MAIC camp and start your search here! Remember MAIC camps are family run camps that are concerned for each child?s safety and emotional development. Above all else M.A.I.C. camps = fun, fun, fun, fun!

Even in this electronic age of computer games, families still like to sit down together to play traditional games. Hasbro board games have a long history and the franchise stands for entertainment for all ages. The company is the largest manufacturer of board games in the world and also has a successful toy making division.

Monopoly is probably its most famous item and is the world’s most popular board game. The first major success for the company however was Mr. Potato Head, followed by GI Joe. When Hasbro took over the Milton Bradley Company in 1984, more board games for Hasbro were added, including Candy Land, The Game of Life and Chutes and Ladders. They also acquired that party favorite, Twister. Today, Hasbro is the parent company of a number of subsidiaries, including well-known brands, such as Playskool, Parker Brothers and Tonka.

In 2008, Hasbro made another acquisition. This time, it was Cranium Inc., which resulted in new board games for Hasbro. The Cranium game is another favorite at parties and is based on the old Ludo game. It is designed for children aged 12 and above and involves drawing, spelling and general knowledge. There are also different versions of the game including Cranium Cadoo, which is for younger children and employs tic-tac-toe. The Cranium Turbo Edition is a faster version of the game and Cranium Kabookii is a video game for the Wii format.

There is something for everyone from the Hasbro board game product range. One of the most popular is Risk. This is quite a skilful game and appeals to those players who are interested in military strategy. Scrabble is the classic word game, loved by each new generation. There is a junior edition for younger players and a travel edition, useful for playing on long car journeys or on the airplane.

Another classic game, Cluedo, is part of the Hasbro board game franchise. Fans of murder mysteries and crime stories love this game. There are several different versions that have rules, differing from the original. Cluedo games with themes include The Simpsons TV show, Dungeons & Dragons, The Haunted Mansion, Scooby - Doo, Where Are You?, and The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror.

Introduced in 1982, Trivial Pursuit combines moving round a board and a general knowledge quiz. It is immensely popular and many a dinner party ends with guests pitting their wits against each other. The classic edition has categories of questions on History, Geography, Entertainment, Sports and Leisure, Arts and Literature, and Science and Nature. There are special editions too that include versions for a particular year, junior versions, biographies, pop culture, the magic of Disney, and Lord of the Rings.

Supplemental card sets are available of several different topics, including sports, TV shows, cinema, the 1960s and country music. There are also DVD versions of this Hasbro board game, including Saturday Night Live and Star Wars.

Secrets of GPA and SAT to get into Harvard and Stanford

Posted By Ivy League Secrets on @ 5:35 pm
by Ivy League Secrets

Here’s what no one is willing to tell you about your GPA and SAT score: at a certain point, THEY DON’T MATTER.

College admissions is a tough game - but there are rules to getting into the best schools like Princeton and Stanford. I worked in the Admissions Office of a Top 20 school for 3 years, so I’ve had plenty of experience figuring out what really matters for high school students.

In terms of your SAT score and your GPA, you must follow 2 rules to save time and stress while filling out your Common Application.

1) Try to be in the top 3-5% of your class in terms of GPA and ranking, and you’ll be strong enough for consideration at most top schools. Being valedictorian just doesn’t mean that much these days, and Harvard values other accomplishments equally

This varies depending on school. If you’re at a tougher school, you’ll have more latitude.

2) Shoot for an SAT score about 2100 (700 across subjects). This is the minimum cutoff and Stanford college admissions will consider you seriously

Now, don’t just AIM for a 2100 only. You should aim for a 2400. But my point is that your time and energy can be better spent elsewhere - for instance, in your tennis competitions, your Science Club, and your student government role

Critical caveat - it’s important that you take as many AP or IB classes as you can. Transcripts are reviewed carefully, and it will hurt if you look like you’re slacking academically. Admissions committees pay attention to these things

Follow these steps, and you’ll have a great chance with admissions competition.

Finally, the single most critical advice I can give you in Hopeless to Harvard is this: it’s all about telling a cohesive, convincing story about your life. You do this through your EC involvements, your essays, and your teacher recs - not your test scores.

Family - Setting Goals For Your Family

Posted By Mike Shivan on @ 3:59 pm
by Mirca Bauer

Sometimes you will wake up and think to yourself that your family life is not exactly where you would like it to be. Relationships can falter over one small disagreement. Therefore it is extremely easy to grow out of touch with your family, or otherwise have your relationships turn into something less than extraordinary. If you feel that your family life is stagnant, then you should immediately start to set goals and give your family life the shot in the arm that it needs. Your goals will depend on what exactly is troubling you, but you can almost always take action to cure your family of whatever problem you feel is riddling it.

Specific goals narrow your desires down instead of simply throwing out a blanket statement. Measurable goals are always obviously accomplished when you reach them. Action-oriented goals mean you can do something about them right away. Realistic goals are useful in your life and leave you something to be accomplished. Tangible goals are ultimately achievable, and won?t just leave you frustrated and worn out. Follow this acronym even with family goals, and you will be able to succeed.

If you are feeling this way about your family, then you should immediately set a goal to spend more time together. You can resolve to eat one meal per day with each other, or you can pencil in a ?family reading time? every night, or go on a picnic every weekend. It doesn?t matter what exactly you do, as long as you are enjoying each others company and becoming closer to each other.

Altogether you can?t go wrong with spending more time together, and this is a great place to start. Another goal you might aim for is to improve communication with your spouse or kids. If you talk to your kids every day about what is going on in school, you can develop much closer relationships, and make them know that you are interested in what goes on in their lives.

The exact same thing goes with spouses. It may seem clich?d, but you should always ask about work. When you talk to your kids or spouse about their day to day lives, make mental notes of things that are going on, and be sure to ask about them at later dates. This will give them assurance that you are actually listening, and they will be much more open to you later.

Well whatever it takes, you should work hard to achieve it. Nothing should hold you back from creating a great family life. Family life is one of the most important things in the world to anyone, and therefore you should place no small value in it. If you need other help to achieve the goals that you have with your family, you can talk to a family counselor who can give you great advice related to you and how you interact with the members of your family.

Parents who went to overnight camp as a child can always tell you a cherished story they still remember in exact detail. To them memories of summer camp are lifelong reminders of experiences with a lifetime?s worth of value. Learn how to select a Summer Camp Find a Summer Camp

Few places on earth can provide a child with opportunities for never ending daily fun the way the best camps can. All of that great fun would be reason enough for anyone to want to be at an overnight camp, but summer camp offers much more to a child?s life, whether it?s a nature camp or animal camp or a science camp or a nonspecific resident camp.

Speaking of value, given our current economy sleep away camp is easily the most affordable summer care choice available. Camp is so much more than childcare. It’s a place and time for kids to gain independence, enhance their skills, make new friends and above all have fun.

Healthy physical exercise is a natural part of everyday life for a camper. Camp activities and interaction with nature provide exercise for the camper?s intellect and imagination as well.

Speaking of value, given our current economy sleep away camp is easily the most affordable summer care choice available. Camp is so much more than childcare. It’s a place and time for kids to gain independence, enhance their skills, make new friends and above all have fun.

Campers grow to find and be themselves, in a natural setting that gently challenges a child to newer and higher standards for their own behavior. The kids camp daily context is activities that encourage perseverance, listening skills, teamwork, and the ability to recognize similarities and appreciate differences in each individual. If it?s a nature camp or an animals camp, kids get even more opportunities to relate with the creatures of the natural worlds around us. Self discovery can become a habit that lasts a lifetime.

Jeff and Lonnie Lorenz, directors of Wisconsin’s Swift Nature Camp for almost fifteen years, believe summer camp is a unique opportunity for dimensional childcare at the best value. The camp experience will add to ordinary child care the making of memories, the opportunity to come to a new place and try new things, the chance to gain skills and independence, and the time to make new and lifelong friends.

Family Tips - Saving Your Family Life

Posted By Mona Hagen on @ 11:44 am
by Mona Hagen

A family unit is the most important unit as far as the demographic structure of any country?s population is concerned. It is important that we retain the structure of the family unit as such. Most of the countries and cultures existing in this world promote family life and family as a unit. Family life can be easily declared as the most important part of any one?s social life. Family life is important as it helps shaping you as a person.

The experiences you have with your family determine what kind of a human being you will be when you grow up. In today?s world family life is even more important. It is not cushy to make your kids learn to be responsible in the fast pace of life which we experience today. When you are a part of the family you automatically learn to be responsible for other family members. You learn to share whatever you have with the others. You feel the affection and love which only your family can give you. In this era family life is thus even more important.

Although in different regions of the world the family ties are apparently a bit different but in fact the ties are almost alike. The way we feel for our family members is the same no matter what part of the world we belong to. All these points prove that the family life is very important and all the people belonging to a family must put in their best to make their experience with their family even better.

People do get angry at apiece other when they are living together. They may sometimes disagree with apiece other. Such incidents must not be neglected as these minor incidents can result in a rift between the family members. To protect the strength of your family ties is your duty. In some situations parents have to bear the anger of their kids. The kids in general and especially those who are in growing age are sometimes very difficult to be handled. There may be more than one reason for your kids to get annoyed. As they are not very mature they behave in a very childlike manner. At this point the parents have to behave very maturely to handle the problems of their kids.

If you act properly you will be able to save your family. Otherwise it is very much possible that your kids may become distant. They may not interact with you if you are not able to make them trust you. Now this is your responsibility to provide them the well needed trust. Children of different ages can get annoyed at their parents due to different reasons. A kid may fight with his parents because he or she does not have the super bicycle a friend has. If he is a school-going boy he may get angry because he thinks he is not getting enough pocket money to spend, while his friends are richer than he is.

Now these are very silly reasons from an adult?s point of view. But the kids do react strangely when it comes to such small matters which look very big to them at that time. Being the parent you need to solve the issue with them. Being understanding does not mean that you provide your children with each and every thing they want to get or you allow them to do whatever they want to. They are immature and their anger is not permanent. Your role in this situation is to handle the anger of your kids in a positive frame of mind. The best way is to talk to them about it. If you discuss things with your kids they will feel closer to you and will react accordingly.

Before you send your child to a summer camp it is a good idea to get a good feeling about a particular camp. Checking out a camp blog can help. Here are just a few things you might find at Swift Nature Camp’s Blog.

Expect to capsize and swim occasionally when paddling a canoe, kayak or raft - it’s part of the sport! But when you hit the water unexpectedly, even strong swimmers need a lifejacket, also known as a personal flotation device (PFD). It allows you to concentrate on doing what’s needed to execute a self rescue and will allow you to assist others. Nearly 70% of all drownings involving canoes, kayaks or rafts might have been avoided if the victim had been wearing a lifejacket!

A Parent’s Guide To Finding Cheap Clothing For Children

Posted By Chris Channing on @ 2:54 pm
by Chris Channing

Children’s clothing has been a popular market that has grown wildly over the years. Because of the increase in pregnancy across developed nations such as the United States, demand for such clothes has shot up greatly. When demand goes up, so too do prices, so finding a better deal on durable clothes becomes a problem that needs fixing.

The first method in getting cheaper children’s clothing is to go online and scout out deals. With increased competition, Internet retailers will often drop prices that are found online to get more sales. Online stores will also have more sales than retail stores to help get their inventory cleaned out when competition remains firm.

Auction, resale, and trade websites are also worthy of investigating. Popular favorites such as Ebay.com are widely used to obtain cheap used and new clothing alike. Since the total price depends on who bids and how much, obtaining cheap children’s clothing is quite easy. Some government-run programs can also be found that will give more information on finding resale shops in the physical world to take advantage of.

Even though the Internet obviously has a solid place in cutting costs for parents, going to local stores is still a good idea considering sales that happen throughout the year. Buying off-season clothing is also a great way to save money and plan ahead. Buying a winter coat in Summer, for instance, is a great way to save a massive amount of money simply because no one else is buying winter coats.

Adults agree that they can take comfort in the fact that children’s clothing is much less expensive than adult counterparts. This is mainly do to the fact that children’s clothing is made of cheaper material, less material, or because fads in children’s clothing are typically less expensive than fads in adult clothing. To take an even bigger cut in costs, try investigating local sales of neighbors who are ridding their home of no longer needed clothing their children may no longer fit into.

Overall, children’s clothing is easy to shop for. The best bet of a concerned parent is to go online and search out the best deals among retailers, charities, and other resources. Using shopping tools to compare prices among hundreds of retailers all at once will prove to be quite the time-saver as well. Of course, also investigate local resources, but keep in mind they are more likely to have less selection.

Closing Comments

Children tend to put a lot of emphasis on trends as they get older. Even with trends in mind, parents can keep up to date on what is “in” and what isn’t, and still save a large amount of money by being knowledgeable of where to get such clothing.

Moses Baskets - Your Questions Answered

Posted By Alice Ault on @ 9:08 am
by Alice Ault

Moses baskets offer and provide a secure, comfortable and cozy sleeping environment so your baby can sleep well. Moses baskets can be made from wicker, which is the most expensive, or maize, but the majority are constructed from palm. You will find that wicker baskets are the most robust. For your ease and comfort the baskets have handles so that you can move them around easily.

Typically, Moses baskets will include a fabric-covered hood and a complete bedding set. Many moses baskets have neutral bedding included so you can choose in advance without knowing if you’re having a girl or a boy. Often, a foam mattress is already included.

Moses baskets make a lovely newborn baby present for expectant parents. Quite a few parents ask for a moses basket as a present for their newborn baby from parents and friends who join together to buy one. Many families have moses baskets which they share amongst the family for each new baby. Teaming up for new baby expenses like this can help new parents out considerably.

Moses baskets may be placed directly on the floor, or they may be placed at bed level through moses baskets stands.

Cons

May only be used for the first three months or so: an expensive purchase if you buy new

Safety tip: Remember to check when buying a Moses basket that its handles are sturdy and meet in the middle.

Pros

Very portable: easy to move from room to room

Your baby may feel more secure in a Moses basket than a cot.

You should carry the basket with two hands, one under the basket supporting the baby and one holding the handles together. If that is a worry for you, simply make sure to move it only after taking your baby out.

Parents’ tip: Let your baby sleep in his Moses basket inside the cot. Then eventually slowly he will get used to sleeping there.
