Golf Swing with Anything But the One Iron

Posted By Guy Morris on March 7, 2009 @ 3:47 am

Most golf enthusiast will agree that the seven iron is the “perfect” golf club. Many will say that they can do without their five and eight iron. Then there is the ever important putter that is hard to replace. The least useful of all clubs, and of any pieces of equipment in your golf bag is the one iron. Lee Trevino, a pro golfer even said that God couldn’t hit a good shot with a one iron.

The one iron is the longest golf iron and therefore the hardest to consistently hit the ball where you want it to go. If for some reason you are drawn to use the one iron then you are probably wrong.

For example, if you’re 200 yards from the green you may be tempted to use the one iron but since it is so hard to control the distance and aim, the three wood would be a much better choice. Depending on your strength you could definitely get the ball on the green and since the three wood is easier to hit with and control, it clearly makes better sense.

So what is the one iron really good for? Well most golfers, even experienced players will tell you that they never use it to play golf. There are many jokes surrounding the one iron and you might get some jokers who will give you alternate uses for this golf club. You could use it to hack tall grass if your ball gets lost and you need to find it. If you come across a wild animal or someone tries to mug you, you could use the long one iron to cause injury.

Some will even tell you stories of destroying their one iron out of frustration. Others will tell you that they use it around the house to retrieve things under the couch or in hard to reach corners. You could even use it as a cane or splint if you get injured on the golf course. If there’s anything that can be sacrificed in your bag it is the one iron. Everything else has a purpose; even the nine iron isn’t totally useless.

Next time someone (usually a novice golf player) asks you what you use the one iron for, make up some creative story and have fun with it. And don’t waste your time practicing your golf swing with the one iron. It’s pointless since you won’t be using it; for golf anyway.

Magic Johnson

Posted By Denise I Smithson on March 6, 2009 @ 6:45 pm
by Denise I Smithson

Magic “Earvin” Johnson, Jr. was born on August 14, 1959 in Landing, Michigan. His career began at Everett High School in Lansing and he went on to Michigan State before being drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. Magic had nine brothers and sisters and his father worked for General Motors while his mother was a school custodian. In his own words, Magic would say as a kid, “I practiced all day and I dribbled to the store with my right hand and back with my left-I even slept with my basketball.”

Johnson became known as “Magic” while still playing on his high school basketball team. A reporter covering a game could find no other way to convey the skill with which Johnson played. After graduating from high school, Johnson chose to attend Michigan State in East Lansing, MI in order to stay close to home. While in college, Johnson played on the school team, the well known Spartans. While a Spartan, Johnson led the team to a 25-5 record and a Big Ten conference title in his first year! His record the following year was no less impressive; the Spartans defeated Larry Bird’s Indiana State team to capture the national title in one of the most closely watched NCAA games ever.

Deciding to go professional, Johnson decided to declare his eligibility for the draft in 1979, where he was snapped up by the Lakers. Lakers fans were incredibly excited to see one of the nations’ best college players on their team. Larry Byrd ended up winning the NBA Rookie of the year award, the Lakers did capture the NBA championship in Johnson’s first year on the team with a 60-22 record. The next year, Johnson and the Lakers performed even better, with Johnson matching his college records – he was the first rookie to start in an all star game since 1969.

The 1980 NBA finals saw another amazing performance from Johnson against the Philadelphia 76ers. Johnson scored 42 points, 15 boards, 7 assists and 3 steals in the series. Magic became the first rookie ever to win the MVP award in the finals. Magic was modest as usual about his achievement: “I just wanted to do whatever the (Lakers) needed to do to win. I was having fun.” However, the next year would see Johnson sidelined for 45 games due to torn cartilage in his knee.

Johnson and his team came back in the 1981-82 season, easily winning their division and facing the 76ers once more for the NBA championship-a repeat win and a repeat MVP Award. Maybe due to some of Johnson’s comments after the 1982 season, or maybe it was just time or for whatever reason, Coach Westhead was replaced by Pat Riley-who would become a legend in coaching in his own right. While some fans weren’t happy at this decision or Magic’s comments to the press, Johnson was jeered this season, but still his averages never dipped below 17.6 points, 5.9 rebounds and 10.5 assists throughout his career.

In 1984, Johnson signed a $25 million contract with the Lakers. It was a good investment for the team, which captured three of the next four NBA titles. Johnson would also score a stunning 38 points in a game against Houston and an even more incredible 46 in a match-up with Sacramento in the 1986-1987 season. This season also saw Johnson’s career-high scoring average of 23.9 points per game. Johnson would win the NBA’s MVP award this season; an honor he would also receive in 1989 and 1990.

Johnson announced before the start of the 1991-1992 season that he had HIV and would be retiring. However, he didn’t simply bow out. Johnson played in the 1991 All-Star game, where he received the MVP award. Johnson has kept extremely busy ever since both in and out of the sports world. He authored a book on safe sex, started companies and foundations, worked as a NBC sports commentator and even spent part of a season filling in as head coach for the Lakers! Johnson also played on the US Olympic Basketball “Dream Team” in 1992. Johnson also returned to the Lakers for part of a season in 1996; a fitting victory lap for this basketball legend.

In his 13 season NBA career, Magic Johnson achieved an astounding 17,707 points ( a 19.5 point per game average), 6,559 rebounds and 10,141 assists. This is in addition to his 1,724 steals (Johnson holds the record for ninth most steals in an NBA career). Johnson was also invited to the NBA 50th Anniversary All-Time team in 1997 and entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnson remains as modest as ever and continues to focus on his philanthropic work, but he is indisputably a living legend in the game of basket ball. As one of his fiercest rivals and greatest admirers, Larry Bird says of Johnson: Magic is head-and-shoulders above everybody else. I’ve never seen anybody as good as him.

How To Buy A Mountain Bike

Posted By Tom Fordson on @ 5:48 pm
by Tom Fordson

Riding a mountain bike is a lot of fun. If you are looking to get into mountain biking, choosing the right bike may be confusing. One of the most important factors of choosing a mountain bike is what you are going to be using the mountain bike for. That may sound funny because you were mountain biking, but read more.

By now, you probably have figured out that there is a lot of different kinds of mountain biking. For example, the most avid mountain bikers, as the name implies, like to take their mountain bikes to rugged and rocky mountain terrain. For more general mountain bikers, there are bikes designed for lighter paths, and less rocky areas.

So, depending on the level of ruggedness, and the kinds of paths you plan on writing, there are different types of bikes and gear you need. There is a direct correlation to kind of riding you will do and the type of mountain bike you should buy. In the rest of this article were going to look at the top three pieces of equipment.

Choosing mountain bike forks. There are different types of mountain bike forks, but the main thing you want to look for are shocks. Mountain bikes with shocks will generally be more comfortable to ride than those that do not have shocks, and will also be better equipped to go over rougher terrain. Mountain bikes without shocks will have a more rigid feel to them, but you may find that these bikes are built more for speed than mountain bikes without shocks.

Picking mountain bike saddles. Some saddles are very light weight and do not offer a lot of padding. Some saddles are heavier and offer a lot of cushioning. Generally, mountain bikes that have saddles without a lot of padding are more high performance oriented, while those that have more cushioning in the saddle are designed for leisurely riding. Some mountain bikes also have shock absorbent seat posts.

In most cases, you will end up trying a few different bike saddles to see which is best. Experimenting is really one of the only ways that you’re going to find out the kind of seats that you like.

Selecting mountain bike tires. When you buy a mountain bike, take a look at the tires. Do you plan to ride on very rugged terrain? Then make sure the tires are wide, a little bulky, and provides lots of traction. Do you plan on riding only on pavement? Then stick with a tire that is a little narrower and smoother, but provides a little bit of traction. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use a tire with a lot of traction on pavement, but you will get more speed with a smoother tire.

These are just a few basic things to look for in a mountain bike. Ultimately, buy a mountain bike that you enjoy riding…you will probably be riding the mountain bike you purchase for the next 5 or 10 years!

Many consider chiropractic treatments as an alternative health care methodology. However, chiropractic treatment is a main stream health care method focused on skeletal system discomfort. Chiropractic medicine is more famous for is focus on the health of the spinal column. They use a range of treatments to deal with the muscles, nervous system, skeletal system and other soft tissues of the body. Massage therapy is used for patients soft tissue treatments to help improve range of motion, reduce discomfort and increase muscle flexibility. Massage chairs are being employed to automate many of these treatments.

With the increase in holistic, natural treatments, chiropractic medicine has become more popular. Typically, a visit to a chiropractor was to relieve back pain or headaches. These are still the majority of visits to chiropractic offices. The doctor must still figure out the actual causes of these symptoms in order to provide relief.

Chiropractors work under the theory that given the right circumstances, situation and nutritional support the body will heal itself. The chiropractor seeks to relieve any undue pressure on the nerve endings that exist in the spinal column. By allowing sufficient nervous control of the body, cells and tissues the chiropractor allows the body to work towards self-healing.

As such chiropractors need to apply specific treatments to induce the bodys self healing process. Some of the treatments include adjustments, electro-stimulation, and massage therapy. Massage chairs are being used to apply massage therapy and other complementary treatments as well.

Massage therapy, along with other treatments by a chiropractor requires them to be administered on a periodic basis. One cannot expect the immediately heal the body. It takes time and it takes the repetition of certain treatments until the body can take back over effectively.

Massage chairs have found their way into many doctors offices. They provide an excellent means to automate many manual methods. They also provide a consistent and reliable means to administer repetitive treatments to patients. This helps both the doctor and the patients to receive consistent treatments.

Massage chairs can provide a variety of massage therapies. They can be used for a general body warm up, target certain areas, or apply certain massage techniques. The consistency of the massage therapy is important and the length of time can be precisely controlled.

There are many advanced technologies built into massage chairs. They have both manual and automatic massage programs. The automatic programs include one-touch buttons which run specific pre-programmed massages. Manual massage techniques can also be selected that use a particular massage style.

A massage chair allows the massage can be applied to a specific area and specific length of time. This helps to reduce the variables in the treatment process. The time and intensity of the massage can be applied consistently.

There are various technologies built into massage chairs. You can now find heaters, stretching systems and music players. Doctors can apply heat to specific areas of the body. Stretching can be activated to stretch the lower body or the shoulders. Patients can relax during the massage to soothing music played on the massage chairs MP3 player.

Massage chairs provide great flexibility. Massage can be applied to the lumbar while heaters warm the legs. Or warm the back while the traction is applied to the lower body. There are many new and unique options that new technology is making available with massage chairs.

The goal of a chiropractor is to get your body to take back over its healing functions. The doctor applies specific treatments on a recurring basis to get the body to respond. Massage chairs are an excellent provider of consistent and reliable massage therapy. These treatments along with others determined by your health practitioner can help to restore the body back to its prior level of functioning.

Seine Net”, A Fishing Legend – Capt. Paul Braly

Posted By Jason Brown on @ 2:40 pm
by Captain Paul Braly

My granddad was a great surf fisherman, so it’s no wonder, my Dad, Paul Braly Sr., got the nickname, “Seine Net”. When he is fishing in front of you, that’s what it feels like if you are behind him waiting for leftovers to come your way, and Saturday morning was no different, when I had the pleasure to get to go along fishing with him.

My dad grew up fishing bait in the guts of the gulf beach and not ever really being a plugger aside from some speck rigs now and then back in the “cooler full and your done” days. These days he doesn’t know what bait is and he can clean an area quick so I don’t let him get too far out in front of me while wading the same shoreline.

This foggy, Saturday morning, we carefully headed to our fishing hole. We started casting the shoreline, opting for a Pink Hologram Devil Eyes with TruLock 1/16 oz jigs as our rig of choice. It didn?t take but a few minutes of wading until we came upon some 18-20″ trout and Dad, sitting next to me, hooked into a monster after the fish nudged the lure three times first. We grabbed a photo of the 7 pounder before we put him back, unharmed.

Working our way up the shore, we got a few more in the 2 pound range before an airboat buzzed the shoreline and skipped into a lake that lied ahead. That was our sign to move on, since the action stopped immediately after that. About 8:15, we hit our next stop and half the fog had lifted by then so we could relax a bit and not have to worry about another boat running into us in the thick fog.

This time I was the one to get the first strike and I thought I had outdone Dad’s fish for a bit, but discovered I had hooked into a redfish. That was the beginning of a fishing frenzy that netted us 11 more redfish between us with just 20 casts. The redfish wore us out and we hadn?t even waded more than 50 yards.

We normally don’t keep many fish, but with Christmas coming, my brother was coming from Irving and was hoping we could snag into some to have for Christmas dinner, so we kept 6 redfish and the five smaller trout but we set that big one, the 7 pounder, free to get a little bigger for another day.

I?ve never seen any other soft plastic give that kind of results, since we each only used that one lure, all morning. You can go through a lot of lures with 5-6 redfish back to back per person. Dad and I would have stayed on the water later than 9:30am, if we knew we were getting back just in time to get a list of household chores lined up for us to do.

Capt. Brooks and Fishing on a Winter’s Day

Posted By Jason Brown on @ 9:04 am
by Captain Robert Brooks

The first evening trip of the week and I finally had some clients to take out for some windy winter fishing. They weren’t much at casting when they first arrived, but we worked with them a bit and they got good enough to hit the practice targets.

With a front approaching at around 7pm this evening, we had strong southeast winds that really uprooted a bunch of seagrass. It was hard to retrieve baits without picking up a bunch of grass and killing the bait’s action. The grass was covering the bait totally in many good places that were holding good numbers of redfish and a few speckled trout here and there. Both species were following the baits but wouldn’t strike it, they knew something was wrong! The clients all watched cast after cast, really thirsty for the hit that just wasn’t happening.

We finally decided to leave the sand and grass beds that were about 18 to 30 feet deep to find somewhere that the winds weren’t blowing so hard. We came across a spot that was similar in depth and bottom that didn?t have the floating sea grass but had some scattered oyster shells, which might indicate there could be some larger redfish holding there, but just not as many, it seemed anyway.

Working the Pink Hologram Devil Eye on a 1/16 oz. TruLoc jig head, slowly up and down, we thought we would have better results than with darker colors since the water was so clear. We were right, within a few attempts we had redfish chasing after the lures. When my clients saw the redfish following the bait and swirling the water they got so excited they kept retrieving the lure, so fast in fact, the fish couldn’t catch it. I had to tell them to relax, and wait to set the hook once you feel the strike, since they needed to present the bait in front of the fish, with such clear conditions. The redfish started wolfing the lures down.

Five of them got their limits of reds in the 24″ to 26.5″ range. All of them were hooked deep and solid, there was no way that they were getting off!

Next, we hit a channel near some descending flats that was sand and mixed grass beds, to try for some speckled trout. The color we had been using was a bit sandier and we tried using the same action but the clients that were rigged differently, one with a Root beer Devil Eye and the other with a Strawberry one were getting all the hits, from peckerheads to 21 inches and there were a lot more where those came from.

While there weren’t as many of the larger trout, which were lying in holes on top of the flats, they were some good-looking fish. When we checked out the drop off, it actually had more fish that were smaller, but keepers were holding there. The clients ended up boating 14 speckled trout and the action was hot and heavy, making it a great 3.5 hour outing!

We never lost any of the new TruLoc jig heads, mainly because of the good quality, sharp hooks, and only lost the tails on two lures that got smashed by redfish and you just can?t help that when they’re slamming them like they were. I really like those jig heads for a good, strong, hook set.

Variants of Airsoft Rifles

All airsoft rifles function nearly identically, but what they are modeled after is as important. Airsoft rifles come in all different shapes and sizes, and many are replicas of real world guns.

One of the most widely known variants is the AK-47. This rifle was developed in the 1940s and is one of the most simplistic rifles available. It is used throughout the world and is a popular replica.

The Steyr AUG is an Austrian rifle manufactured since the late 1970s. It has an easy to hold design, is notably sleek, and is quite fast. Only recently has it become a widely used variant, as portrayal in the media has made it considerably more recognized

The airsoft manufacturer Classic Army is a producer of the highest quality G36 assault rifles. The G36 is an H&K product that has recently been adapted in to an airsoft rifle. Airsoft replicas of the G36 have exceptional firing power and endurance.

A less known but still somewhat popular airsoft rifle is the M14. It is technically classified as a battle rifle, although the properties of the real weapon do not transfer over completely with airsoft.

A more modern variant similar to the M14 is the M16. This rifle is widely used in the American military as well as in airsoft games. Full metal airsoft M16s are especially powerful and are ideal for advanced players or professionals.

One of the most popular, if not the most, is the H&K MP5. It has its origins in the 1960s and is used by dozens of countries for military and law enforcement purposes. In airsoft, the MP5 shares the properties of the real life counterpart by displaying an amazing firing rate.

As you can see, there are many variants of airsoft rifles available, and this is not even the complete list. With all this selection, it is remarkably easy to find the perfect product.

Get Gardening Supplies

Posted By Samantha Asher on @ 4:25 am
by Nancy T. Ferguson

Do you want to start a garden? Make sure you have all the right supplies first. What will happen if you start digging up your yard to start gardening and find out you don’t have all the right supplies to continue? You will have a huge mess and an ugly yard until you get the tools.

In order to find out what supplies you need, go through the gardening process. The first step is the cultivate the land and prep the soil. To break up the soil you will need a tiller. A motorized tiller will work best to break up the soil. They are efficient machines but quite expensive.

If you dont have the budget for a till, you can replace it with several tools. Of course, you will need a shovel for the initial digging. If you have especially tough, rocky land, you may need a pickax to help you with the initial digging. Once youve broken up most of the dirt and removed the tough grass on top, a garden hoe will be necessary to further break up the soil.

A hoe is small on the end and can be used to chop any chunks and left-over grass and roots. You should use a cultivator to remove rocks and other large pieces that dont belong.

Once you are ready to start planting, you will need some smaller hand tools. A trowel is a small hand shovel and will be used very often for transplanting, removing weeds, etc. You can also get a hand size cultivator to use.

When your plants begin to grow, you will need to prune them every once and a while. Shears will work well for this especially for bushes. You can use them to keep bushes from over growing and keep them healthy.

There are a few other basic tools you will find useful such as a gardening hose, wheelbarrow, circle hoe, extra soil, fertilizer, etc. If you have a small garden, you can use a watering can, but a hose will be much easier and more efficient for larger gardens.

A wheelbarrow isn’t absolutely necessary, but you will find it very useful for yard work in general. A circle hoe can help you weed our garden because it can get in the smaller spaces. These tools can help you maintain a beautiful healthy garden.
